Akagera is Rwanda’s only Big Five park, and for most visitors it is the surprise of the trip — lions, elephants, buffalo, rhino and leopard in a landscape of lakes and papyrus swamps, only about two and a half hours from Kigali and at a fraction of the cost of a gorilla permit.

Who sets Akagera’s park fees
Park fees at Akagera are set by Akagera Management Company, not by tour operators. Every operator charges the same base fees, which means the differences between quotes come from vehicles, guides, lodging and how the day is organised — not from the entry price. We reproduce the official schedule below so you can check any quote against it.

What this means in practice: for a two-night safari, a single international adult pays US$150 in entry fees. Two people sharing a vehicle pay US$300 between them. Rwandan and East African residents and citizens pay substantially less — if you hold one of those IDs, tell us when you enquire, because it changes the arithmetic meaningfully.
Entry fees are charged per person, per stay category, and cover your time inside the park. Game drives themselves are done in a private or self-drive vehicle.

Two planning notes. First, the night game drive is the single best-value activity in the park — a 2.5-hour drive with a park vehicle, spotlight and spotter, for less than half what a boat trip costs a private group. Second, the scheduled sunset boat trip on Lake Ihema is the one most travelers rate highest; it is 1.5 hours for US$45, and it is worth building the day around.
What a full Akagera trip actually costs
Park fees are the fixed part. The rest of your budget is transport, lodging, activities and meals.
Getting there from Kigali
Akagera’s main gate is roughly two and a half hours from Kigali on good tarmac. That makes a genuine day trip possible — and it also means you can do Akagera and something else in the same short trip, which is not true of parks in Kenya or Tanzania.
Where you sleep changes the budget more than anything else
- Inside or on the edge of the park — lodges and camps overlooking Lake Ihema, with the shortest transfer to the gate and the best chance of being in position at dawn.
- Outside the park — guesthouses in Kayonza or Nyagatare reduce the lodging line considerably, at the cost of an early start and extra driving.
- Camping — the cheapest option inside the park, with fees published above.
The cost of a safari vehicle
A private 4×4 with a driver-guide is quoted per vehicle, per day, not per person. This is the detail that decides whether your Akagera trip feels expensive or not: one couple or a small group sharing a vehicle pays the same vehicle rate as a solo traveler paying alone.

How Akagera compares on cost with Kenya and Tanzania
It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that they are not the same product.

Akagera is smaller and less famous than the Serengeti or the Masai Mara. What it offers instead is accessibility and value: a real Big Five park you can visit in a day from Kigali, and combine with gorilla trekking in the same week. Getting the most out of the money you spend
- Add a night rather than a second activity. Entry for a second night is US$50 for an international adult, and evening and early morning are when the park is at its best.
- Do the night drive. US$40 per adult for 2.5 hours is outstanding value and shows you animals the daytime game drive will not.
- Book the sunset boat trip over a private charter unless you specifically want the boat to yourselves — the scheduled trip is US$45 per adult against a US$200 flat private rate for a smaller boat.
- Share the vehicle. Every extra traveler in your group cuts the per-person vehicle cost.
- Ask about resident and citizen rates if you hold a Rwandan or EAC ID.
- Skip the single-day round trip if you can afford one night. A same-day return from Kigali works, but you spend the best game-viewing hours in the vehicle on the road.
- Combine with the gorillas. The fixed costs of a Rwanda trip — vehicle days, airport transfers — are shared across both, which is why a five-day trip covering the gorillas and Akagera usually costs less per day than two separate short trips.
When to visit — and when it is best value
Akagera Management Company’s own guidance is that June through early July gives the highest lion sighting rates of the year, with mid-December to mid-February offering similar conditions at lower lodge rates. That second window is the one to note if you are watching the budget: the park is dry and productive, and the lodges are quieter.
Rwanda’s wetter months bring greener scenery, full waterholes and lower rates again, at the cost of some roads becoming harder going and animals spreading out rather than concentrating at water. Birdwatching is excellent year-round.

How much does it cost to enter Akagera National Park?
US$100 for an international adult for a one-day visit, rising to US$150 for a two-night stay and US$200 for three nights. Children aged 6–12 pay half. Pan-African, EAC resident and Rwandan citizen categories pay less — see the full table above.
Are fees the same for East African residents?
No. Rwandan and EAC citizens pay in the region of RWF 15,000 (about US$16) for a day; EAC residents have their own rate. Bring your ID, and tell us at the enquiry stage so we quote the right category.
How much is a boat safari on Lake Ihema?
US$35 per adult for the scheduled one-hour morning or daytime trip and US$45 for the 1.5-hour sunset trip. Private charters start at US$200 for a small boat.
Do I need a guide for Akagera?
Self-drive visitors can hire a guide for US$25 (half day) or US$40 (full day). If you travel with Millimount, a driver-guide is part of the safari, and the guiding is included.
Can I visit Akagera in one day from Kigali?

What animals will I see?
Akagera is a Big Five park: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, alongside giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile and over 480 bird species. Sightings are never guaranteed — it is a wild park, not a zoo.
Is Akagera cheaper than the Masai Mara or Serengeti?
Entry fees are lower and you need far fewer days, which makes the total trip cost lower for most travelers. The landscapes and scale are different. It is an excellent short safari, not a replacement for a week on the open plains.
